It has been too long

It has been too long since I started, edited and finished a blog piece.

It has been too long since I felt my feet on the ground.

It has been too long since I had quiet space in my head to think.

It has been too long since I have been able to fall asleep at night and wake up in the morning in the time zone that I am.

So, even though I am still wiped out from jet lag and even though we are getting ready for a family trip to the east coast, I want to update you on what has happened since I last posted in mid April.

  • I got sick had to go on antibiotics. I learned that the Australia private clinics are staffed by kind and caring people.
  • We went to Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock and took a sunrise tour/walk around it one morning. And then had dinner one night, watching the sunset over the rock. Wow, it was amazing.

  • We went to Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territories. Gorgeous doesn’t begin to describe the beauty there. We saw crocodiles that were easily 12 feet long: very scary and very primordial. And scenery that took my breath away.

  • On the way back to the airport we encountered a suicidal wallaby. Here is what it did to our rental car, I will spare you photos of the wallaby after our collision. My advice to anyone renting a car in Australia. Take the full insurance collision coverage. Thank goodness we took a partial amount.
  • Next we went to Phillip Island and watched the little blue penguins march onto the beach from the ocean after sunset. We had night vision binoculars, so you will have to take my word for it, it was amazing.
  • Then Kamala came out and we took her to Hamilton Island, a resort island with no cars, only golf buggies. It has amazing snorkeling and beautiful beaches as it is by the Great Barrier Reef. And of course their famous Coffee Martinis. We help Koalas and David held a python. Hill Inlet by Whitehavan beach is gorgeous. The sand is white and soft like powder.

  • After Hamilton Island, we took Kamala wine tasting–drinking age in Australia is 18. We stopped by several wineries and explored cute little towns in the country side. It was a day of wine, coffee chocolate and fun.

  • And then for our grand finale, we went to Indonesia. First we had a few days in Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores. From there we took a day tour to Komodo National Park to see the komodo dragon on Komodo and Rinca Islands with lunch on a pink beach.

  • And then onto Bali where David had found a beautiful hotel/Yoga Center on a cliff that had to be one of the most serene settings we have ever been in. Our ‘room’ was made up from an old Balinese home; we had a private poola meditation space along with our beds and an open air bathroom. There were only 6 ‘rooms’ in the place so it was very quiet and peaceful.

  • Here are some of the scenes from our day in Ubud.

  • So after 4 1/2 months away,  36 plane rides, 15 boat rides I traveled 182,164 miles according to TripIt, a great travel app that kept track of ALL my travel and in the correct time zone.
  • Here are our final travel scenes from our grand adventure, yes that is 10 suitcases. Not pictures are our additional 3 carry-ons.

Thank you for reading and for commenting! It was a special journey and a great way to rediscover our relationship after 23 years of having kids in the house. While I miss all the chaos and teen energy, it is nice to have found a new “kid-less” rhythm with my ‘honey!’

Heidi, I think you and David probably had the experience of a lifetime. Hard to believe you just celebrated your 25th wedding anniversary.
Hope to see you guys soon.
    Love, Frank

It was a trip of a lifetime. And next time he has a sabbatical (in 7 years) who knows where we will go!

Heidi, what a great summary of your time in my part of the world.
What a lot you saw, experienced and tasted.
Your comment about the Crocodiles is correct, there was another life lost last weekend, unusual for this time of the year, a family having a day’s fishing, …….dad threw fish scraps over the boat and disappeared, quietly and silently!!!!!!!
I am so pleased you all enjoyed your time here.

We had a great time in your country, and enjoyed getting to see you in Tassie and in Melbourne. Hope to see you on this side of the world when you get to the states again! Please remember us to your father.
